[Sea Spa in Horumersiel]
Wangerland Touristik GmbH (WTG) is planning the redesign and expansion of its health tourism facilities, with a focus on Thalasso as the core competence of the Lower Saxony North Sea, at the spa treatment center in the North Sea health resort of Horumersiel-Schillig.
Across the two floors of the building, the aim is to stage both the active and passive experience of Thalasso therapy. A holistic approach is being pursued, one that appeals to all the senses. Perhaps the greatest challenge lies in ensuring access to the site-specific healing resources of seawater and natural silt.
The entire interior design, including the therapy rooms, reflects the typical North Sea character in connection with the Wadden Sea UNESCO World Heritage Site. Harmoniously coordinated warm colors, along with flowing and soft shapes, are intended to give guests a feeling of security and comfort. The use of seawater and silt as unique regional healing resources of the North Sea—combined with other typical North Sea products such as algae or sea buckthorn—ensures a high degree of authenticity and naturalness.
The goal is to create a dedicated Thalasso Center. At its heart is “the path to nature,” which is translated into the architecture in its purest essence: original – simple – clear – pure – clean – reduced – natural.

Every two years, the competition honors outstanding design achievements in façades and interior spaces – contributing to a sustainable, high-quality building culture. In 2025, the expert jury selected five winners, ten nominees, and one special award from more than 600 submissions across Europe.
With a nomination in the competition category “Interior Design – Living and Lifestyle,” the “Thalasso Meeres Spa” in Wangerland was recognized for its interior concept, consistently developed and inspired by the Wadden Sea. The jury was impressed by how monochrome, warm color tones, carefully placed wooden accents, and textured surfaces perfect the restorative immersion in nature within these interior spaces.
